John; Yes, you need an antivirus. This AV works with Vista: https://www.my-etrust.com/SubscriptCenter/MSTrialRegistration.aspx?cid=1855&lang=en-US Depending on your version of Norton, it may or may not be compatible. Vista has a firewall and spyware tool so that covers the minimums.
BUT remember Windows Vista is still in Beta and will be for several months. NEVER install Beta anything unless you are prepared to perform a Clean Installation to remove any issues. Also be prepared for total data loss. This applies to any Beta from any manufacturer.
That is part of the nature of Beta and those unable or unwilling to accept the above remote but possible consequences should not install anything Beta.
